Saving the world

I recently became the UK's very first member of 1% For The Planet. This terrific environmental initiative was created by Yvon Chouinard, founder of the clothing company Patagonia. It's an alliance of businesses that pledge 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes. Already, the group has donated over $1.7m.

With environmental issues ever more urgent, this is more than just fluffy ethics. Environmental sustainability has become a straightforward matter of human survival. I'm extremely proud to be leading 1%FTP's growth in this country, and will be doing what I can to spread the word. Watch this space.

Go Nell Go

I recently wrote a fundraising appeal for the charity DebRA. This small but vital organisation researches, and supports those with, the appalling skin condition EB. You may have seen "The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off" on Channel 4 recently, documenting the last months of Jonny Kennedy. This astonishing man, also the subject of the mailing, suffered with EB and, latterly, terminal cancer. And yet he had an apparently inexhaustable supply of energy, optimism and humour. It was a devastating hour's television.

The appeal was signed by Nell McAndrew, who escaped from the Australian jungle (and Ant & Dec) not long ago. Nell is a DebRA supporter and became good friends with Jonny. She ran the London Marathon for DebRA recently, and has so far raised almost £30,000. Click below to find out more about DebRA, and add to Nell's fabulous total.
